From The President:

I'm working on my chilli recipe. Don't complain if it's hot - you wouldn't complain if you went to an ice cream tasting and it was cold. This year's will be called "Thermonuclear Face-Melting Vengeance Lava Chilli". Yes it will be hot. You will regret not voting for my "Alamagordo Dawn" last year as your eyeballs turn red and your toenails catch fire.

Dad's Army continues to get funnier, I'm starting to remember how to march and I could hear the Daylesford singers rehearsing on Sunday and can't wait for the performance in May.

I know Jen's got some more great events coming up so watch this space.

See you backstage,

Than.

Plaudits And Awards

Stella Halsall Award presented to Carol Birch

Immediately following the opening night of the annual Famous for Fifteen Minutes playwriting festival, the audience were surprised to be asked to stay in their seats as BMDS presented the Stella Halsall Award to stunned director and playwright Carol Birch.

The Stella Halsall award remembers one one of the earliest supporters of BMDS who provided her living room at Newstead as an early venue. The award in her memory is only presented when a person who merits it is found. It is purely given for devotion to the theatrical arts in Bermuda. The Stella Halsall award is presented only very rarely and the recipient is usually caught by surprise.

Carol Birch's career in Bermuda theatre started with credit as a hairdresser and wardrobe assistant for "Cinderella" in 1977. Since that beginning she has risen to director, author of three pantomimes, originator of 24 Hours to Curtain, served on the Executive and Drama Committees and is currently writing our 2010 Panto.

Carol has worked with G&S, Jabulani, Jargan and Triangle theatre companies and directed Tony'n'Tina's wedding for two seasons. SheÕs been a finalist in Famous for Fifteen minutes five times and had her play "Just Reward" produced in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Alumni Theatre.

Her play "Piece Work" is currently onstage in the Famous for Fifteen Minutes playwriting festival and runs through September 5th.

We would like to thank Carol for her consistent dedication and excellence in the theatre.

B.M.D.S. Charitable Trust

In keeping with the aims of the BMDS Charitable Trust, which is to provide bursaries, sponsorship, and support to the performing arts in Bermuda, the Trust this year is offering to underwrite some of the costs associated with sending a group from within the BMDS membership to Theatre Ontario's Adult Summer Courses. The idea is to provide additional training for those active members, or those who want to get involved in local theatre, with the necessary skills in either the technical side of theatre or the on stage side. We have chosen three classes from the list that they are offering this year, feeling that these are the areas that most would be interested in, and would also ultimately benefit BMDS. Please check in at the theatre for further details.
