Two Staunch Supporters
Posted: 6/26/2008
We were saddened by the passing of two staunch supporters of the Arts in Bermuda who helped to make BMDS what it is today. The sad passing of Maurine Cooper in May and the recent passing of Molly Smith. Their contributions have not gone unrecognised. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.

Intimate Apparel, As It Was
Posted: 6/26/2008
Very many congratulations to the cast and crew of "Intimate Apparel"! We knew we were in for a treat .but I think that if you one of the hundreds that saw it you will agree that the production went above and beyond our highest expectations. This play was beautifully and sensitively directed by Jenny Burrell. For Jenny, this was her debut production as the director of a full length play...for us, I hope, it was the first of many plays to come! The set was delightful and beautifully detailed. Congratulations to Philip Macintosh for his design and execution. The play boasted a superb cast, and we were treated to some very fine acting.

Many congratulations and thanks must go to Naomi Little and Elizabeth Hadler for producing such a terrific show! There was an incredibly dedicated crew behind this production and it showed!

Posted: 3/26/2008
IT'S SAD TO SAY GOODBYE but please join us at Daylesford on Saturday, March 29 from 6 pm for a leaving party for Steve & Katherine Watts who will be setting off into the wild blue yonder very soon.

Stevo and Dolly are long standing members of BMDS who have been involved both on and off stage. Stevo has served on the Executive for a number of years and has been responsible for looking after our computer and technical needs - in fact, he designed and developed the brilliant box office system that we use. Stevo also delights in blowing things up and has run the explosive side of special effects for many pantomimes; he has been seen backstage wearing a shirt that says " SFX If you see me running - try and keep up".

Come by and help say a big thank you to them both and wish them luck on the start of their next adventure.

Neil's Simon's "CALIFORNIA SUITE" scheduled
Posted: 4/27/2005
“CALIFORNIA SUITE”
6TH – 17TH September 2005

BY NEIL SIMON
DIRECTED BY MARC MOLLICA

We are happy to announce that Marc Mollica will be returning to our shores this summer to direct a production of one of Neil Simon’s most celebrated comedies “CALIFORNIA SUITE’. Marc made his first visit here in 2002 to direct the critically acclaimed production of “ART” by Yasmina Reza for the Bermuda Festival.
Marc is a past Associate Director of the Bristol Old Vic, a lecturer at South East Essex College and Masters Performing Arts College and Artistic Director of Threadbare Theatre Company.

Neil Simon is the most performed playwright of all time after Shakespeare and undoubtedly the most commercially successful playwright in history, Neil Simon has had 30 of his plays performed on Broadway and is the only playwright ever to have had four Broadway productions running concurrently. His plays have been translated into dozens of languages from Chinese to Russian and more of his plays have been adapted to film than those of any other American playwright.

Simon has also written the book for a number of musicals, as well as screenplays for several of his plays, plus almost a dozen original ones. He received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay of “California Suite” in 1978.

For four decades, Neil Simon has lit up the stage with his ability to infuse humour into the trials and tribulations of everyday people's lives. "He has ability to write characters" said actor Jack Lemon of Simon, "even the leading characters that we're supposed to root for are absolutely flawed. They have foibles. They have faults. But, they are human beings. They are not all bad or all good; they are people we know."

AUDITIONS: Auditions will be held towards the end of July for this production. Accurate information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

And the winner is... !

POPULAR PLAY JUDGED THE WINNER

A packed Daylesford house for the Gala Night for the 4th Annual Famous For Fifteen Minutes Playwriting Festival witnessed celebrity judge Tom Coash announce the winner of this year’s festival as Jean Hannant for her play ‘Old Sailors Never Die’. A stunned and trembling Jean told the audience that she had got her idea from a documentary she had seen some years ago.

Jean had seen a documentary about a veteran who had been in two wars and had a career in the military but in civvy street he could not cope. The subject of the documentary traced the veteran’s life and followed his daily pursuits and how he could not manage the little things in life – getting on a bus, buying groceries etc – because all his military life he had someone do those ‘chores’ for him.

The veteran in the documentary was a soldier. Jean knew nothing about the life of a soldier but did know about the life of a naval officer, her father. Jean related that all of her family were naval folk and she had always known that if one is to write about a subject then write about something you know. Photographs of Jean’s father, his napkin ring were actually used on stage as props.

'Old Sailors Never Die', depicts a retired and widowed naval commander (Peter Frith).who is adapting to life in a boarding house and is befriended by an equally lonely housekeeper played by Barbara Jones. Tom Coash felt that this play had all the ingredients that he was looking for particularly the dialogue and the change in the characters from the opening to the end.

Jean who is proud to be a septuagenarian playwright was awarded the ‘Golden Inkwell’ and cheque for $250.

Photos and a press release will be poster later today.

FF15M Judge identity REVEALED!
Posted: 2/25/2005
BMDS are very proud to announce the identity of this years celebrity judge for Famous For Fifteen Minutes. To some, he may need no introduction as he is BMDS alumni. He is currently Director of New Play Development at Stageworks/Hudson, an Equity Theatre in New York; formerly at the Manhattan Theatre Club and Actors Theatre of Louisville.

He has won numerous awards for his playwriting skills and his most recent award was for a play that premiered (as a staged reading) at Daylesford. The award, the Humboldt State National Play Award was quickly followed by the runner-up slot in the Kennedy Centre's David Mark Cohen Award. Nominated for a Barrymore Award and recommended for a Joseph Jefferson Award from the Bailiwick Theatre in Chicago - we are over-the-moon to have the very talented and professional TOM COASH as our judge this year.

Tom was also the co-founder of Famous so it is fitting that he can come back to Bermuda and see the progress we have made with this prestigious production.

FF15M Judge to offer Seminar
Posted: 2/9/2005
A seminar entitled "The Fine Art of Submission" will be presented by the guest Judge of our Playwriting Competition “Famous for Fifteen Minutes” on Sunday 6th March at 11am.

The Fine Art of Submission

Getting a play produced can be one of the most thrilling, gut-wrenching, wonderfully fulfilling experiences an author can have. It can also be one of the most frustrating things imaginable to accomplish.
This workshop/ seminar will address all the ins and outs of submitting your play to theatres, contests, and publishers. How to send your play, where to send your play, what to expect once you send your play, what happens with your script at the other end, reject letters, acceptance calls, royalties, copyright laws, theatre vs. film, and much more. PROOF
BY DAVID AUBURN
11TH-16TH APRIL 2005

Directed by Ron Campbell

This fascinating drama is one of the most acclaimed new plays in recent years .It won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a ‘Tony’ award in 2001. Proof explores the unknowability of love as much as it does the mysteries of mathematics,

On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a young woman who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, Robert, must deal not only with his death but with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire, and with the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that Robert has left behind.
As Catherine confronts Hal’s affections and Claire’s plans for her life, she struggles to solve the most perplexing problem of all: How much of her father’s madness- or genius- will she inherit?

“David Auburn combines elements of mystery and surprise with old fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre…[Proof is a ] smart and compassionate play of ideas.”
-----David Kaufman , New York Daily News

“[A] wonderfully funny…ambitiously constructed work…Auburn’s flare for the theatrical is a continual source of satisfaction.”
------Robert Hofler, Variety

Interesting fact : A film version of Proof is soon to be released by Miramax , directed by John Madden and starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhall

Interested in THEATRE? Looking to meet NEW PEOPLE?

The Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society was founded over fifty years ago with the aim of promoting theatre and music in Bermuda. Since its early days at various locations, BMDS has performed or hosted hundreds of drama, music, and dance productions. Daylesford houses a large rehearsal room, dressing rooms, a 120-seat theatre, and a comfortable theatre bar. We are run entirely by volunteer members and are always actively seeking new people to become involved in this well-established Bermuda institution.

BMDS encourages individuals who are interested in all aspects of theatre—acting and singing, set design, construction and painting, sound, lighting, backstage crew, box office, publicity, etc.—to come down and visit us at Daylesford, on the corner of Washington and Dundonald Streets. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and get involved in live entertainment. Theatre is fun!

We are open Monday to Friday, 5 to 11 pm.

OF MICE AND MEN
BY
JOHN STEINBECK

Two drifters, George and his friend Lennie, with delusions of living off the “fat of the land,” have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. It’s Lennie’s obsessions with things soft and cuddly, that have made George cautious about who the gentle giant, with his brute strength, associates with. His promise to allow Lennie to “tend to the rabbits” on their future land keeps Lennie calm, amidst distractions, as the overgrown child needs constant reassurance. But when a ranch boss’ promiscuous wife is found dead in the barn with a broken neck, it’s obvious that Lennie, albeit accidentally, killed her. George, now worried about his own safety, knows exactly where Lennie has gone to hide, and he meets him there. Realising they can’t run away anymore, George is faced with a moral question: how should he deal with Lennie before the ranchers find him and take matters into their own hands?

STEPPING OUT
BY
RICHARD HARRIS

A warm and funny play about the lives, laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall. There is ex-professional dancer Mavis, who runs the class; cheerfully overweight Sylvia; Andy, a plain do-gooder with no confidence; snobby, but well meaning Vera; timid Dorothy who works in Social Security; Maxine, attractive sharp and very shrewd; fat, and plain Lynne; Rose, the self-styled ‘token lady of colour’, and Geoffrey, the lone male. As the play progresses, the class’s dancing improves to such an extent that by the climax, a grand charity show performance, they have been transformed into triumphant tappers, worthy of any chorus line!

CAST OF CHARACTERS

Lynne
Dorothy

Andy
Geoffrey

This wonderful comedy directed by Keith Madeiros and produced by Adrienne Hintz, will audition on 1st and 2nd March 2004 and will perform at Daylesford from 26th April 2004 – 1st may 2004.

There is a requirement for the cast to have some experience of tap dancing but we will provide lessons. Expressions of interest in this show should be made to Keith or Adrienne.

THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS

BOOK BY
LARRY L KING & PETE MASTERTON

MUSIC & LYRICS BY
CAROL HALL

Based on the true story of a legendary Texas brothel known as the Chicken Ranch which operated from the 1840’s to 1973 when it was finally shut down by the efforts of a crusading Houston radio commentator and his conservative audience.

The musical begins during the last days of the Chicken ranch (which earned its name because, during the depression, customers were allowed to pay with poultry!) Melvin P. Thorpe, a television broadcaster eager for the spotlight, has just scored a career triumph by exposing a peanut bar for not having as many peanuts as advertised. Now he turns his attention to what is potentially a much bigger triumph. This appalling thing he calls “loveless copulation” at the Chicken Ranch. Although many of the State’s politicians have, in fact, been customers of the brothel, they are eager to preserve their political careers and thus choose publicly denounce the Chicken Ranch and its inhabitants. Finally, in spite of the protection of the local sheriff, Miss Mona, the proprietress of the Chicken Ranch, is thrown out onto the street along with all of her girls, even as Melvin P. Thorpe receives a commendation from the Governor for his services to the state of Texas.

This fabulous piece of musical theatre will audition on 19th and 20th April 2004 and will be performed at Daylesford from 17th June 2004 – 26th June 2004. The cast of characters will be posted in due course. Suffice to say there is a need for male and female actors who can sing, and dance (ish)!!

LEND ME A TENOR
BY
KEN LUDWIG

The understudy who becomes a star overnight is one of show business’s best-loved stories. When, in 1934, the fate of a charity concert in Cleveland, Ohio (which has been sold-out to 1000 customers and is to be followed by a party involving 50lbs of shrimp mayonnaise) is in jeopardy because the Italian tenor hired to sing the lead has fallen into a drunken stupor and is presumed dead, the impresario’s diminutive, docile assistant, with operatic ambitions, blacks up and wins acclaim as Otello. The tenor awakens, dons his costume, and thence follows an hilarious comedy of confusion in which the two Moors are absurdly confused by swooning females. Add a volatile Italian wife, an outrageous bellhop and a cynical impresario and you have a recipe for laughter.

Saunders
Tito Merelli

Accomplished director John Steber to visit.
Posted: 6/1/2003
BMDS has been most fortunate to secure the services of John Steber, an accomplished professional American director to visit and direct 'After the Fall' by Arthur Miller. This play which is semi-autobiographical (although Miller denied that the self-destructive central character was based on ex-wife Marilyn Monroe), is a drama which takes place inside the tortured mind of a 40 something lawyer, haunted by his disastrous affair, he revisits his past and shuffles through haunting unsettled memories. "Once again Miller vividly shows us the plight of the everyday man."
