Sleeping Beauty 2022

November 30, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - December 10, 2022 @ 7:00 pm

The Pantomime returns to the Earl Cameron Theatre Stage as The Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society presents Sleeping Beauty. The Panto has been a fixture in Bermuda for over 50 years but was missing the last two years due to Covid.

Local Director Laura Bardgett very much wanted to return to the golden age of BMDS pantomimes with a traditional storyline combined with local themes. She has set the Panto in Bermuda with beautifully created backdrops of Castle Island. With the kind permission of Alan Frayn, the writer of Sleeping Beauty, Laura was able to include plenty of Bermudian references and up-to-the-minute local jokes to keep adults amused alongside the usual slapstick for the kids. Updated music from the likes of Taylor Swift, BTS and Lizzo provide modern, catchy tunes performed by locally recognizable talent to ensure the audience will want to participate in all the fun. (Oh yes you will!)

Joining Laura on the production are Bermudians Dave Pitman as Musical Director and Choreographer Eryn Beach. The cast ranges in age from 8 years to 76 years old and are all Bermudians or local residents. The diverse range of talent participating in the show is amazing, Many of the cast are easily recognised whilst for some this is their first foray into Panto.

The Story starts with a Royal christening that is interrupted by Bad Witch Hazel who casts a spell on the baby Princess.  We then follow the Princess as she grows up first in school and then at her 16th birthday when she is allowed out of the castle for the first time – of course, she meets a Prince, finds a forbidden room, and picks her finger sending her to sleep along with the rest of the castle.  A forest of thorns grows around the castle. After 100 years the princess is awakened with a kiss from a Prince and lives happily ever after.  All of this takes place in and around Marsh Folly and laughs are provided by Nurse Hettie Harpic (the Dame) with songs and dancing by the whole company.
